White Hart Roundabout

Swindon, UK

During a highway improvement project at a major transport intersection in Swindon, the White Hart Roundabout – unexpected ground conditions were encountered by the contractor, meaning that the road’s subbase had to be constructed from scratch.

 Benefits

  •  Extended working life of road due to Tensar geogrid
  • Improved timescales thanks to the rapid solution to overcome poor soils
Client's Challenge

Following excavation work at the roundabout, higher than expected levels of the groundwater table severely compromised the underlying clay that was the foundation beneath the road base. An urgent solution was required to eliminate the needs for further excavation of poor quality material, which would have increased construction times and costs.

Tensar Solution

Tensar geogrid was installed with recycled 6F5 aggregate material to form a mechanically stabilised layer (MSL) and allow construction to progress over the poor soil, maintaining the required pavement design life and reducing future maintenance costs. The site programme was maintained and completed on time with minimal additional costs.
