New High Performance Soil Reinforcement for Roads, Bridges and Slopes Endorsed by BBA Certification

Tensar International’s newly developed RE500 series of uniaxial geogrids have been awarded British Board of Agrément Certification* for roads, bridge abutments, retaining walls, slopes and embankments in UK highway construction. RE500 uniaxial geogrids show significant long term strength improvements to create potentially lower cost structures for clients.

TENSARTECH EMBANKMENTS BUILD SOLID BASE FOR BUSINESS PARK SUSTAINABILITY

Prominent landscape features for Nottingham’s new high sustainability Castle College Technology Park and Number 1 Science and Technology Park are the surrounding green embankments. By using a Tensartech earth retaining solution from Tensar International, construction company Morgan Ashurst was able to realise the architect’s design over very weak ground as well as provide the most cost-effective solution and prevent soil from going into landfill by re-using it in construction.

A UK innovation has won a construction award in the USA. Tensar International’s innovative TriAx™ geogrid gained the prestigious 2009 Best New Products Top Rollouts Award from Better Roads® Magazine, following its launch in North America. The only award in its category, it was one of only 20 products ‘that enriched the highway and bridge construction industry’ in 2009.

Magnetic treatment attracts fuel savings at Tensar

Tensar International have cut energy usage by 6% and improved boiler efficiency by about the same level through the use of a magnetic fuel treatment on one of its gas-fired steam-raising boilers. The Thomas Cochran steam raising boiler.

RAPID RESPONSE TO BRIDGE FLOOD MISERY

Following November 21’s flood destruction of the town’s bridges over the River Derwent in Workington, Cumbria, Army Royal Engineers have used Tensar International’s TriAx™ geogrid to help construct new bridge abutments for a 40 ton temporary footbridge. Connecting the north and south of the town, the actual bridge will take a week to assemble, and is expected to be in place for Monday 6th’s morning school run.

By developing a cost-effective, rapid and highly sustainable solution for the Brigg Line embankment in Lincolnshire, Arup and Network Rail, with Tensar International and support services and construction company Carillion, have demonstrated a reinforced soil retaining wall approach using geogrids cast into in-situ reinforced concrete wall facing units that can be used to solve similar challenging problems all over the world.

TESTS by Hertfordshire Highways (Hertfordshire County Council’s highways department) have confirmed that reinforcing the asphalt layer on a badly cracked road at a busy Hitchin roundabout with Tensar’s Glasstex paving composite, has extended pavement life by at least 4 years bringing about 40% savings in road maintenance.

NEW WING WALLS for the Old Quarrington Bridge on the A688 Wheatley Hill to Bowburn Link Road in Co. Durham, required an aesthetic natural finish. Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering used the Tensartech GreenSlope earth retaining system to ensure a highly attractive vegetated appearance, with sustainable construction, saving up to 20% in site time over alternative faced systems.

CARBON EMISSIONS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED IN CONSTRUCTION OF BARNSLEY HOTEL DEVELOPMENT

Contractors working on behalf of hotel developer New World Barnsley Ltd* and Concept Project management achieved carbon savings of 27% during the construction of the new Barnsley Ramada Encore Hotel. Tensar’s new TriAxTM ground stabilisation geogrids system was used to overcome soft ground conditions across approximately 2,500 sq m of the site, which is located off Junction 37 of the M1 at Capitol Park.

AGGREGATE DECISION SHOULDN’T DEFLECT INDUSTRY SUSTAINABILITY DRIVE SAYS TENSAR

The continuing battle by the British Aggregates Association (BAA) to protect its members’ interests against the UK’s Aggregate Levy, which it has termed a ‘stealth tax’, may have recently received a favourable recommendation from the European Court of Justice, but the so-called victory is not endorsed by all interested parties, points out Tensar International.
