Reinforced soil slopes offer a fast, economical and versatile technique for constructing new embankments or repairing failures to existing slope structures. In fact, Tensartech slopes may be built at up to an angle of 70° beyond and Tensartech NaturalGreen are for structures built to 45°.

For GreenSlope structures beyond and up to Tensartech NaturalGreen 70° the system of choice is Tensartech GreenSlope.
Environmental constraints and rising land costs have increased the need for value engineering, frequently requiring the engineer to make use of cohesive or contaminated soils as fill materials. Both NaturalGreen and GreenSlope can take advantage of this by allowing the engineer to use these site won materials in the design.

Reinforced soil slopes provide an economic solution and give engineers the confidence to create structures with a natural vegetated finish.

Some of the benefits of Tensartech Slopes Systems are:

-Minimises land use
-Restricts encroachment into environmentally sensitive areas
-Reduces the amount of fill required for conventional slope angles
-May allow the use of site-won soils
-Simple and rapid construction
-Cost-effective alternative to conventional concrete retaining walls
-Vegetated face is a softer alternative to hard face retaining walls in sensitive areas

Tensar have recently completed the creation of a number of new Animated Construction Sequences which clearly demonstrate the installation methods and techniques of the Tensartech Earth Retaining Systems:

The unique structure of Tensar’s uniaxial geogrids enables load from the soil to be transferred to the reinforcement very efficiently. As a result, stability at the face is achieved without any need for containment. Construction is simple and cost-effective. The Tensar uniaxial geogrids, which terminate at the face, are simply placed in horizontal layers on top of compacted fill. At the surface a composite erosion control mat manufactured from biodegradable coir fibre and durable polymer meshes will help establish the surface vegetation and reinforce the root system for the long-term.

Tensartech GreenSlope System up to 70 degrees

Tensartech GreenSlope is a system, which is both economical and attractive for slopes constructed up to an angle of, of 70°. Internal reinforcing of the soil structure is provided by Tensar uniaxial geogrids reinforcing the soil mass, with durable prefabricated steel units forming the face. The geogrid and the facing units are securely and uniquely connected using Tensar’s high security bodkin connection. The facing units are lined during installation with a selected biodegradable erosion mat, which will help establish the chosen vegetative cover to the slope. Choosing Tensartech GreenSlope has significant advantage over conventional retaining wall solutions.

When construction of the GreenSlope system is completed the face may be planted with the chosen vegetation The prefabricated steel mesh units are delivered to site complete with appropriate face liner and brace bars. Tensar uniaxial geogrids are connected to the steel mesh facing units and selected fill material

The facing units are delivered to site, stacked and tied on self-off-load vehicles ready to be lifted in to position and have the appropriate geogrid connected using the Tensar bodkin. The brace bars hold the face at a constant angle allowing the contractor easily to place topsoil and structural fill behind the face.

Alignment is simplicity itself with no need for the costly and time consuming formwork necessary to maintain accurate alignment when using techniques such as wraparound.

The designer is able to choose a straight-up 70° structure ingress of rainwater or a terraced structure with step-backs built in to the face to allow ingress of rainwater to irrigate the chosen vegetation at the face.

Slip failures in natural or man-made slopes can be repaired by excavating and re-using the failed soil reinforced with Tensar geogrids. This method is more cost-effective and less time consuming than disposing of the failed soil and replacing it with imported fill.

The technique can be used equally for failed embankment slopes or for failures in cut slopes.

Benefits

• minimises disposal of on-site fill and soils
• reduces haulage costs
• cuts costs compared to stone replacement methods
• reduces traffic disruption and lane closures
