SUDS - Sustainability in Stormwater Drainage
|
| The usage of permeable surfaces can reduce the incidence of localised and regional flooding. |
Sustainability is Key
Where government polocies encourage sustainability, SUDS stomwater drainage techniques perform a crucial role in delivering policy objectives
Stormwater Drainage systems can be developed in line with the ideals of sustainable development, by balancing the different issues that should be influencing the design. Surface water drainage methods that take account of quantity, quality and amenity issues are collectively referred to as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS). SUDS systems are more sustainable than conventional drainage methods because they:
- Reduce the impact of urbanisation on flooding by managing runoff flow rate
- Enhance water quality
- Encourage natural groundwater recharge (where appropriate)
- Are sympathetic to environmental and local community needs
- Provide a habitat for wildlife in urban watercourses
