Landfill Construction
Engineered landfills, with engineering innovation by Tensar
Modern engineered landfill sites need to not only be safely constructed, but also comply with prevailing regulations using environmentally sound, long-term solutions. And with nearly 30 years’ experience of creating innovative solutions, there are a number of ways Tensar Technology can help.
How you can benefit
Tensar’s uniaxial and TriAx® geogrid systems have proven extremely versatile in landfill construction, used in various ways to create a stable, safe solution:
- Reinforcing lining materials (including geomebranes/ clay barriers or composite liners) to prevent damage
- Increasing the available storage space such as steep-sided quarries
- Controlling deformation and settlement
- Resisting slippage on slopes and soil veneers
- Enabling the vertical expansion of landfills over existing waste sites
- Constructing economic, low maintenance mechanically stabilised access roads
The primary landfill applications
Tensar’s innovative systems have a number of applications within landfill construction. These are the main uses:
Landfill soil veneer stabilisation
to resist sliding movement on slopes that are subject to temporary load from leachate drainage material, or as sloping capping systems to resist the weight of drainage material and topsoil cover
Landfill capacity expansion
(also known as ‘piggy-backing’) involves new landfill being placed over old waste, so the base liner must retain its integrity against the differential settlement of the old waste beneath it
Landfill liner support
is needed when the substrate has a steep irregular surface profile, such as in former quarries, and creates a smooth profile for the liner system while maximising the void space. Steep reinforced soil bunds can also be built to form internal cell walls.
