Erosion control on slopes

Natural vegetation can inherently provide good soil erosion protection; but in certain situations – especially on steep slopes or areas subject to occasional high velocity flows like spillways, shorelines subject to wave run-up or flood bunds – vegetation needs help to get established and then to remain in place. The vegetation can benefit from additional reinforcement to its root system to enhance its natural erosion resistance and so maintain both its function and attractive appearance.

A range of erosion control solutions for soil slopes is available from Tensar and sister company North American Green (NAG). The three-dimensional Tensar Mat, for example, is a non-biodegradable solution designed for long-term reinforcement of the root system. Amongst NAG’s products for soil slope protection are high-strength VMAX³ C350 turf reinforcement matting; a matrix of polymer net and a coconut fibre mulch. And for rock slopes, Tensar geogrids can be draped over the face (secured by rock anchors) to control loose rock fragments and allow soil particles to be retained, helping the development of vegetation.
