Erosion control of channels
Tensar technology around rivers and drainage channels.
Natural vegetation can inherently provide good soil erosion protection. But in channels such as stream banks, swales or ditches– which are prone to occasional water inundation and high velocity flows – an extra long term protection layer is needed. Such added reinforcement to the root system enhances the erosion resistance of the vegetation, helps maintain the natural appearance and provides an environmentally superior solution to hard drainage channel revetment linings such concrete or gabion mattresses.
How Tensar can help
A range of erosion control solutions is available from Tensar and sister company North American Green (NAG). The three-dimensional Tensar Mat, for example, is a non-biodegradable solution designed for long-term reinforcement of the root system. Amongst NAG’s products for erosion protection are high-strength VMAX3 C350 turf reinforcement matting, as well as biodegradable and photodegradable systems. Reinforced grass surfaces have been shown to withstand current velocities of over 4m/sec for up to 50 hours– more than adequate for erosion control of most drainage channels subject to occasional water inundation.
For higher velocity flows, Tensar’s Triton mattress systems can provide improved levels of protection
The benefits
Using an erosion control solution to reinforce vegetated slopes can bring a number of benefits:
-
Cost-effective, long term
erosion control: by strengthening the root system, the vegetation is easier to establish and provides better protection
-
Immediate short term protection: covers bare soil and helps establish good vegetation cover
-
Easy and economical to install: simple and straightforward installation keeps costs to a minimum while maximising benefits
-
Natural, environmentally friendly solution: an attractive, vegetated finish combines with environmentally safe materials for an ideal solution
